Dr. Carol Bullin

Bullin Receives Provost's College Award for Outstanding Teaching and SRNA Elizabeth Van Valkenburg Award for Excellence in Nursing Education

A testament to her excellence in teaching, Assistant Professor Dr. Carol Bullin recently received not one, but two distinguished teaching awards.

Both awards were presented to Carol at special events held in early May.

Dr. Bullin was chosen as the College of Nursing recipient for the annual Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching. This award recognizes an outstanding teacher in each college at the University of Saskatchewan. The Elizabeth Van Valkenburg Award for Excellence in Nursing Education is given by the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association’s (SRNA) and awarded to a registered nurse who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of nursing education.

Dr. Bullin emphasized that teaching and learning are active processes for which both the teacher and student share responsibility. She also noted that this perspective was best articulated by Florence Nightingale who in 1883, wrote of nurse educators in preparing nursing students: she asked “What is training? We can’t put into you, what is not there. We want to bring out what is there. Training is enabling you to use the means you have in yourself” (as cited in McDonald, 2009, p. 188).

Dr. Bullin joined the college in 2011 as an experienced clinician and educator. Opened to innovativeness, Carol accepted the challenge of being the first professor to teach nursing education using remote presence technology (RP). Dr. Bullin is a member of several research teams involving remote presence technology, and is known internationally as an expert for her work.

Carol was born in Toronto and moved to Saskatchewan in 1985. She lives on an acreage in Grandora with her husband Frank, 6 cats (Miss Kitty, Euphemia, Baby Doll, Six, Barnabus, & Mr. Grumps), and a dog (Eddie).

Congratulations on your outstanding achievements Carol.
