Medicine Wheel Learning Community Summer Orientation Camp

The College of Nursing and the College of Arts & Science are partnering to deliver the Medicine Wheel Summer Orientation Camp from August 9 to 12.

The Colleges piloted the camp last summer and due to overwhelmingly positive feedback will offer the camp, along with an additional day of programming, again this year.

The Summer Orientation Camp provides incoming pre-professional year students from across the province with an orientation to biology and math concepts, lab tours, academic coaching, as well as social activities.  The camp complements the College of Arts & Science's Aboriginal Students Achievement Program (ASAP). The Medicine Wheel Learning Community brings Aboriginal students interested in nursing and other health sciences together in small classes, taking common sets of courses with additional tutorials to build academic skills. Students enrolled in the Medicine Wheel Learning Community also receive dedicated academic, cultural, social and career supports. In addition to sharing a classroom experience, the students gather for a weekly 'ASAP Hour' guided by two upper year Aboriginal peer mentors. Nearly all of the pre-nursing courses are offered with program supports, which are extended into spring and summer sessions to distribute the heavy course load for new students.

The College of Nursing, in partnership with the ASAP Learning Communities, seeks to provide Aboriginal pre-professional year students opportunities to feel a sense of belonging and identity with the University of Saskatchewan and College of Nursing. The promise of this collaborative effort is to further increase access for Aboriginal students who want to study science, nursing or other health professions and to create a supportive community around this goal.
