U of S Nursing Students Continue to Exceed National Exam Pass Rates

Success on national exams for University of Saskatchewan (U of S) College of Nursing Bachelor of Science (BSN) students continues on an upward trend, with new results released across the country today.

The National Council of Licensure Examinations exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) was adopted for the first time in 2015 - as the new standardized test for all nursing graduates in Canada. The exam, used in both Canada and the United States, is designed to assess the knowledge skills and abilities that nurses need, in order to provide safe competent care as licensed professionals.

Latest results indicate that U of S graduates achieved an 88 percent overall success rate on the exam which is higher than both the Canadian (84 percent) and United States (84.5 percent) average pass rates. The upward trend is evident when compared with statistics released in fall of 2015 that showed an initial success rate of 79 percent for U of S BSN graduates and a 70 percent national average pass rate. The College of Nursing is pleased with the latest results and congratulates our newest alumni on their achievement.

Although U of S nursing graduates have consistently outperformed the national average, ongoing quality improvement is still an important focus for the College. "We will continue to work with our academic and regional partners, as well as the Saskatchewan Registered Nursing Association (SRNA) to prepare students for success as registered nurses in the 21st century," said Beth Horsburgh, Interim Dean College of Nursing. Strategic initiatives that build on the underlying strengths of the undergraduate program have been launched with nursing faculty and Continuing Education and Development for Nurses (CEDN) to further improve student success rates.

The College of Nursing commitments to the "Learn Where You Live" education model and to the success of Indigenous students in College nursing programs, promote access and community development in rural and remote areas of the province. Further, these commitments contribute to a standard of excellence for health science education in Saskatchewan. The College of Nursing is, and will continue to be, a world leader in educating nurses in interprofessional health care, research, practice, innovation, capacity building and policy development.
