PhD Student Receives Graduate Teaching Fellowship

The College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers PhD students the opportunity to receive training in university teaching. The College of Nursing is extremely pleased to announce Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) student Jill Friedt has been awarded a 2015 University of Saskatchewan Teacher Scholar Doctoral Fellowship.

The intent of the fellowship program is to improve the teaching and learning experience at the University of Saskatchewan. Through this fellowship, Jill will gain experience in university teaching and deliver undergraduate classes under the guidance of faculty mentor, Associate Professor Dr. Joyce Davison. “Jill will gain first-hand experience teaching an undergraduate class in the College of Nursing, which will be an excellent opportunity for her to apply the knowledge she gains in the first semester of the graduate teaching fellowship program. For the College of Nursing, this fellowship is a great way to help us prepare future faculty members in the college.”

Jill is currently completing her third year of studies as a PhD student and is supervised by Professor Dr. Karen Semchuk from the College of Nursing Yorkton site. “Jill’s PhD will provide her with the knowledge and skills to achieve her career goal, which is to teach and conduct research in a University nursing education setting. Jill’s research focus is on understanding factors that influence the quality of life for younger residents in long term care facilities.”

College of Nursing faculty are leaders in nursing education. “New faculty and graduate students can learn a lot about teaching from their students when they tackle their first course. Jill will have excellent mentorship and valuable opportunities to teach online, at a distance and to large classes,” says Interim Graduate Chair Dr. Jennifer Kryworuchko. “Ultimately, we want to support our graduate students to reach their goals.” Every year, the College of Nursing offers teaching fellowships and assistantships in order to engage graduate students in undergraduate teaching and learning.

“I am honored to have been selected as the recipient of the 2015 Teacher Scholar Doctoral Fellowship,” said Friedt. “Thank you to Drs. Karen Semchuk and Joyce Davison for their generosity and support! I am looking forward to discovering new innovative teaching practices, ideas and approaches that will allow me to strengthen my teaching skills, through the mentored teaching course.”
