Recent Nursing Graduate to Compete at 2013 Summer Universiade

As she enters the workforce after her recent convocation, this summer is not only an exciting time for College of Nursing graduate Christine King as she begins her career as a nurse, she is also competing in the 2013 Summer Universiades in the sport of pistol shooting.

In July, Team Canada will be sending over 330 athletes to Kazan, Russia for the Summer Universiade. Christine's pistol team consists of three athletes, all of whom are University of Saskatchewan students or recent grads. Tough competition is nothing new to Christine though. She has been pistol shooting for 14 years, spending the last 10 of those competing. She won Canadian Nationals in 2008 & 2009 as a Junior, placed fourth at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008 in India and placed third in Air Pistol in the Senior Women's event at Canadian Nationals last year. She shoots in two events - Air Pistol (10 Meters) and 25M Pistol (.22 Calibre).

Originally from Prince Albert, Christine found her love for pistol shooting after her older brother Trevor became involved in the sport. This very unique and interesting sport is a family affair, as both Christine's brother and father also shoot. When asked about her love for the sport, Christine replied, "I love that it’s an individual sport and it's just me out there competing, but at the same time, I have the support of my team and the clubs I am part of." Christine is a member of the Saskatchewan Handgun Association provincial team.

Upon completing high school in Prince Albert, Christine entered directly into the Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (NEPS) in Regina. She graduated on June 6th as a University of Saskatchewan College of Nursing graduate, Honors with Great Distinction, and couldn't be more proud as she comes from both a family of health care providers (her mom and sister-in-law are nurses and her brother is a paramedic) and a family of U of S Alumni.

With a smile, Christine said, "I was always going to be a Huskie!". She is currently working at St. Pauls Hospital in Saskatoon and plans to return to the U of S to complete her Master of Nursing in a few years.

The 2013 Summer Universiade takes place July 6th - July 17th. The College of Nursing wishes Christine best of luck at both the Summer Universiade, as well as at Nationals this August in Calgary.

UPDATE: Christine placed 27th out of 59 competitors in the Women's Air Pistol event and 42nd out of 44 women in the 25m Pistol Shooting event. Although the results may not have been exactly what she was hoping for, Christine said, "The level of competition and number of athletes in the sporting events was phenomenal. I had a fantastic experience and I can't wait to see where I go from here." She concluded by saying, "The experience was remarkable; it was amazing to be part of such a talented group of University aged Canadians and University Athletes worldwide."
