College of Nursing Faculty Member Brenda Person Receives 2013 SRNA Mentorship Award
Each and every one of us can look back and reflect on the people and events that have shaped us into the people we are today. Often we look back fondly on one person who had or has a significant influence on our career path and consider that person to be our mentor.
Being a mentor requires an individual to invest a lot of time and energy to share their personal knowledge with their mentee. Each year, the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (SRNA) recognizes a practicing member who exhibits exceptional mentoring abilities and presents them with the SNRA Mentorship Award. The College of Nursing is very excited to announce faculty member Brenda Person at the Prince Albert Site has been selected as the 2013 SRNA Mentorship Award recipient.
"Every time I meet someone who has worked with Brenda, they comment on how much they learned from her and how they appreciated both her skill and her willingness to share her knowledge," said Dr. Lois Berry, Associate Dean, North and North-Western Saskatchewan Campus and Rural and Remote Engagement. "She serves as an excellent role model not only for nurses and other health care workers alike, but for students and co-workers in the College of Nursing as well. In her role as a nurse educator, Brenda mentors students on a daily basis and works hard to link her students with their future role as nurses." Dr. Berry went on to say, "Brenda has also played a significant mentorship role in supporting three new fulltime and countless part-time faculty members to our site since she has come to the College."
"I am both honored and humbled to receive this award," said Brenda Person. "As Registered Nurses, I believe mentorship is required to bring us together across generations, practice environments and sectors in a manner that guides us to acknowledge our interdependence and to appreciate that "we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality" (Martin Luther King, Jr.) that enables us to provide the best possible care to our clients and communities. I am forever grateful to my mentors for the support, encouragement, guidance and words of wisdom that inspired me to realize my dreams and reach my potential. Our Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses says "nurses are accountable to share their knowledge and provide feedback, mentorship and guidance for the professional development of colleagues, novice nurses, students and other health care team members". I believe in accountability!"
