Chief Nursing Officers Visit USask

Provincial and federal Chief Nursing Officers met with USask Nursing faculty, staff, and students.

The University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing was pleased to welcome two distinguished nurses for a visit on January 16th.

Health Canada’s chief nursing officer Dr. Leigh Chapman and Government of Saskatchewan chief nursing officer Liliana Canadic met with faculty, staff, and students to discuss the current state of nursing education and the nursing profession in Saskatchewan.

“To have not one, but two chief nursing officers visit the University of Saskatchewan, is a significant event,” said College of Nursing dean Dr. Solina Richter (DCur).

“It is important for nurses in these positions, who ultimately represent the collective voice of nurses in this province and in this country, to hear from our faculty, staff, and students.”

Dr. Chapman began her visit to Saskatchewan with a stop in Prince Albert where she toured the new USask Prince Albert Campus, the nursing lab, and met in-person with Prince Albert based faculty, staff, and students, as well as virtually with faculty, staff and students from the Regina Campus and distributed sites.

She then travelled to Saskatoon where she had lunch with nursing leadership, met with College of Nursing faculty and staff, toured the Clinical Learning Resource Centre during a Post-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing lab, and visited a class of 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students.

Government of Saskatchewan chief nursing officer Liliana Canadic joined Dr. Chapman in Saskatoon.

“It was an honour to show Dr. Chapman and Liliana our beautiful Saskatoon campus and state-of-the-art facilities and it was wonderful for Dr. Chapman to have the opportunity to travel to Prince Albert and tour the great new campus,” said dean Richter.

“To spend time with these two incredible nurses, hear their plans for the future, and to have the opportunity to share our comments and concerns about nursing education and the students transition into the workforce, was a privilege.”
