Dr. Roslyn Compton Receives Provost’s Teaching Award

Associate Professor Dr. Roslyn Compton has been awarded a Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching.

University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing associate professor Dr. Roslyn Compton (PhD) is the College of Nursing recipient of this year’s annual USask Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching, which recognizes an outstanding teacher in each College at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Compton is a prominent researcher focusing on gerontological nursing, a collaborative co-worker, a graduate student supervisor, and an exceptional mentor for learners.

Her teaching philosophy is Teaching is Relationships.

I share stories from my experiences to show others that learning comes from living in relationships with others,” said Dr. Compton. “I encourage learning to become lifelong, to focus not on knowledge, but on nurturing learning with others. I facilitate learning not just for knowledge, but for understanding ourselves, our experiences, and the experiences of others.”

Growing up in rural Australia, Dr. Compton shared a deep love with her grandmother, who nurtured her interest in older adults. They often talked about what it meant to grow older in the place you called home. The stories shared with her grandmother continue to guide Dr. Compton’s work, as a nurse, researcher, and teacher.

Dr. Compton completed her Bachelor of Health Science at Western Sydney University in 1992, Masters of Education at the University of New England in January 2006, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta in 2014.

Dr. Compton joined USask College of Nursing in July 2017 and holds an adjunct senior lecturer appointment with the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine at the University of Sunshine Coast in Australia.

Faculty who teach alongside Dr. Compton, praise her teaching style and say:

Dr. Compton creates a healthy academic learning-centered environment, models supports for undergraduate and graduate student mentorship, and successfully employs a responsive learner-centered approach.

Dr. Compton values continuous quality improvement, evidence-based and data-informed decision-making, and collaborating to facilitate learning change in her ‘nurse,’ ‘nurse teacher,’ or ‘nurse researcher’ roles.

When Dr. Compton learned she was receiving the Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching, she had this to say about her teaching.

“As a neurodiverse gay woman, I often struggle to thrive in a world that enjoys labeling people as ‘different.’  Starting in my childhood, I began to collect a community of mentors – my life teachers – some people knew each other, and some people were worlds apart, not only in location, but also in the way they saw and understood the world. Each person saw and understood my uniqueness – they saw me, the person I was and the person I was becoming. Each person attended to a different part of me – my character, my career path, and my life choices. I am ever so grateful and humbled by my experiences of living within a collective mentorship, where relationships are the foundation, and my growth occurs in community. I continuously learn the value of life teachers and how each person meaningfully contributes to helping me to see and grow into ‘me’ as I continue to grow older."

“Congratulations to colleagues, from across the USask community, who are being recognized with 2023 teaching awards,” said Dr. Airini (PhD), USask’s provost and vice-president academic.

“Dr. Compton’s commitment to academia and her passion to provide mentorship for and build relationships with her colleagues, fellow researchers, and students is exemplary,” said Dr. Solina Richter (DCur), dean, USask College of Nursing. “The College of Nursing is fortunate to have Dr. Compton as an associate professor.”

Dr. Compton was celebrated as the College of Nursing recipient of the Provost’s Teaching Award at the University of Saskatchewan Celebration of Teaching event on June 14th.
