USask College of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Hua Li (PhD)

Dr. Hua Li Receives Provost’s Teaching Award

Assistant Professor Dr. Hua Li has been awarded a Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching.

University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing assistant professor Dr. Hua Li (PhD) is the College of Nursing recipient of this year’s annual USask Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching, which recognizes an outstanding teacher in each College at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Li is a skilled clinician, working as a registered nurse specializing in mental health and addictions. Her experience and knowledge in this specialized setting, combined with her passion for teaching, results in an excellent learning experience for students. Dr. Li promotes a student-centred approach to learning and demonstrates a passion for and a strong personal commitment to active learning. She believes nursing instructors must engage with students, convey excitement and passion for nursing, and install core nursing values.

Based on student evaluations, students feel fortunate to have had Dr. Li as their professor.

She was wonderful. We had room to explore our skills and develop them further. She was incredibly supportive and a great resource.

Professor Li was encouraging and provided helpful guidance and insights. She bridged the knowledge in the course and shared information about how what we are learning in the classroom will transfer to clinical practice.

Her lectures were informative and factual, and gave me a better understanding of the material. The exams and project facilitated additional learning on the subject matter. I was able to apply course content to my clinical practice and felt I was successful in doing so, due to the instruction she provided.

Dr. Li provided a lot of examples from her nursing practice at Dube, which I appreciated, as we did not get to see the acute side of mental illness, so it was nice to have some examples from clinical practice to learn from.

Dr. Li is a teacher, a mentor, and a role model. She quickly attends to concerns, employs active listening, and is always professional in her conduct. She contributes to the growth of others within the profession by sharing her expertise and knowledge of best practices in mentorship with colleagues through relational support, presentations, publications, and participation on committees.

“The College of Nursing is fortunate to have Dr. Li as an assistant professor,” said Dr. Solina Richter (DCur), dean, USask College of Nursing. “She is a member of a number of professional associations, serves on multiple committees, supervises graduate nursing students, and is a sought-after guest speaker. Dr. Li makes a significant contribution to teaching, has an infectious passion for nursing and nursing education, and above all, is always a pleasure to have in the room.”

Dr. Li completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan in 2008, her Master of Public Health through the USask School of Public Health in December 2012, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences at the USask College of Medicine in July 2018.

Dr. Li will be celebrated as the College of Nursing recipient of the Provost’s Teaching Award at the University of Saskatchewan Celebration of Teaching event on June 1st.
