Green Infrastructure and COVID-19: Identifying Equity Gaps for Future Resiliency Planning

Co-Principal Investigators - Dr. Wanda Martin (PhD), Associate Professor, University of Saskatchewan College of Nursing, Saskatoon Campus and Dr. Lori Bradford (PhD), Assistant Professor, University of Saskatchewan School of Environment and Sustainability
Collaborators: Jessie Best and Kati Burns, Sustainability Division, City of Saskatoon and Mike Velonas, Planning and Conservation, Meewasin Valley Authority

A Green network is a collection of green spaces, natural areas, trees, and other natural infrastructure in an urban area. With ongoing restrictions and the initial lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, anecdotal evidence suggests that urban-dwellers turned to urban Green Networks for stress relief and recreation. Green Networks may serve an essential role in the development of resilience and promotion of wellbeing; however, few have conducted formal studies of the use and importance of Green Networks in urban environments. This study proposes a systematic review of the literature on green infrastructure and primary data gathering with a survey within Saskatoon, SK to contribute to the valuation of Green Networks in urban areas, making recommendations on the equitable design and use of Green Networks.
