The College of Nursing Celebrates 75 Years
It's an exciting time in the College of Nursing, as we celebrate 75 Years of delivering nursing education. To celebrate this milestone, we've planned events across the province including kick-off gatherings in September and October 2013 and an all-years reunion, guest lecture and gala in May 2014. To mark the start of the anniversary year, the College hosted kick-off gatherings in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Yorkton.
Saskatoon
On September 26th, faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the College gathered in the new Health Science E-Wing Atrium for an evening full of laughter and even a few tears. Former Dean of the College Yvonne Brown gave a great presentation titled, "Are We There Yet? Nursing's Search for a Home.". Guests were then treated to an entertaining dialogue comparing "nursing now and then" delivered by current nursing student Lindsay Vold and alumna Anne Cholod, tours of the new Health Science Building, a poster presentation highlighting the innovative research taking place in the college and a trip down memory lane with an archival display including year books, lamps, uniforms and much more. One of the most memorable moments of the night took place when Dr. Lucy Willis was recognized as an Honourary Alumnus of the U of S College of Nursing, after the members of the 75th Anniversary Steering Committee nominated her earlier in 2013. Regina
On October 1st, the College of Nursing Learning Commons at the Regina Campus was filled with guests enjoying 75th Anniversary celebrations. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the College were entertained by a very spirited skit taking guests through the history of nursing performed by current nursing students, as well as a brilliant presentation titled, "Carpe Diem", delivered by Donna Brunskill, RN. The campus was open for tours and visitors were wowed by their surroundings, quoting one person, "I had no idea this campus was so exquisite". Researchers were on hand displaying a poster presentation highlighting current research projects taking place in the college. Guests concluded the evening by taking a trip down memory lane viewing items such as photos, nursing books from the early 1900's and the senior stick in the archival display.
Prince Albert
Wonderful music by harpist Pat Sonntag, an exciting traditional dance presentation by Linden Gamble, son of Alumna Pauline Dreaver and a memorable evening of storytelling took place in Prince Albert on October 3rd at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club. As faculty, staff, students and friends of the College gathered together to celebrate, alumni from throughout the decades (1950's to 2010's) took the stage to tell their nursing stories and share their treasured memories. Guests were also treated to a poster presentation highlighting the research taking place in the college and a trip down memory lane with an archival display including caps, pins, song books and sport team jerseys.
Yorkton
The Gallagher Centre was abuzz on October 8th, as the College hosted our 75th Anniversary kick-off gathering in Yorkton. Pianist Bob Drayer filled the room with beautiful music and guests enjoyed a poster presentation highlighting current research projects in the college and took a trip down memory lane viewing items such as clothing, newsletters, the senior chalice and a historical procedures manual in the archival display. The evening was highlighted with key note presentations by Sunrise Health Region President and CEO Suann Laurent on "Leadership" and College of Nursing Assistant Professor Noelle Rohatinksy, who spoke about "Pursuing Graduate Studies".
