Celebrating Student Research Excellence
Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Students Showcase Innovative Research.
The University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing's Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Student Poster Showcase brought together students, faculty, staff, and members of the university community to celebrate the accomplishments of six USask undergraduate nursing students, who spent the summer immersed in research.
Held October 5, the showcase provided students with an opportunity to present their research findings through professional posters and brief five-minute presentations.
Each student reflected on their research journey, outlined key findings, and shared the skills and insights they gained while working alongside their faculty mentors.
Congratulations to two student recipients, Caden Dunn and Purva Khosla, who tied for the first-place prize.
Dunn, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student from the Prince Albert Campus, was supervised by Dr. Geoffrey Maina (PhD), and presented on Foster Care and Mental Health: A Rapid Scoping Review of Impacts on Homelessness.
Khosla, who studies her BSN at the Muenster distributed nursing site, was supervised by Dr. Isil Isik Andsoy (PhD) and presented on Interventions to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence Among Muslim Immigrants: A Scoping Review.
Their projects were recognized for the quality of their research, presentation, and knowledge translation.
"The showcase is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and achievements of our students, while highlighting the impact of undergraduate research experiences and implementing a culture of research and scholarship excellence among future USask Nursing graduates," said Dr. Louise Racine (PhD), associate dean research and graduate studies with the College of Nursing.
"These experiences help students develop a spirit of inquiry that enhances critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and leadership skills to demonstrate the relevance of research as a way of knowing to guide nursing practice.”
The Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships are designed to introduce nursing students to scientific research, foster curiosity and innovation, and build the next generation of nurse researchers.
Through the program, students receive full-time summer employment under the supervision of a College of Nursing faculty member and access research support through the Nursing Unit for Research and Scholarship Excellence.
Since its launch, the Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship program has provided meaningful research opportunities for nursing students, while showcasing the College of Nursing's three signature areas of research.
Over the past three years, 15 students have completed fellowships, with many going on to present their work at events such as the College of Nursing Research and Scholarship Day, the USask Society for Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium, and other academic conferences.
