Nursing Students Receive Over $247,000 in Student Awards

Undergraduate and graduate nursing students were awarded over $247,000 in scholarships and bursaries in 2022.

Undergraduate and graduate nursing students are recognized annually at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing Awards Ceremony.

This year, on October 29th at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, we were honoured to recognize the 88 USask Nursing students, who received a combined 70 awards, totaling $247,098.15.

“The awards these students are receiving are a testament to the dedication they have made to their studies,” said College of Nursing dean Dr. Solina Richter (DCur).

“The nursing education they have worked so hard for will provide them with a strong foundation as a nurse when they complete their programs, whether they work here at home or anywhere around the world. And we all know the world needs nurses right now.”

We asked this year’s award recipients to share what their plans are when they complete their nursing education. Here are just a few of those responses.

What I hope to achieve in my future nursing career is to help those who need it most when they cannot help themselves.
Audrey Barath (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Yorkton Site)
My research involves developing strategies and priorities to enhance the support that caregivers to older adults receive in Saskatchewan.
Steven Hall (Master of Nursing Thesis student, Saskatoon Campus)
It is critical to support the transition of new graduate nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope to conduct research in this area, while completing my PhD in Nursing.
Sarah Karwacki Solie (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing student, Off-Campus)
With my nursing degree, I hope to increase health equity for Indigenous populations by working alongside rural and remote Indigenous communities to improve health outcomes.
Wendy Leveque (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Prince Albert Campus)
As a future nurse, I aim to provide safe, competent, compassionate, and person-centered care throughout my career. I strive to provide individualized care that meets the unique physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of each person I encounter.
Hailey Loffler (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Regina Campus)
I hope to improve the health of rural communities, one individual at a time, while simultaneously being a role model for all future nurse practitioner students.
Melissa Mish (Master of Nursing Primary Care Nurse Practitioner student, Off-Campus)
My goal throughout my nursing career is to be a light to marginalized communities, with a focus on youth, and to provide them with the support and care that they rightfully deserve.
Brooke Parr (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Saskatoon Campus)
I would like to use my degree to acquire skills that I can use to become a better educator for future nurses. I would also like to explore the anxiety students’ face and find ways to better prepare them for a rapidly changing healthcare environment.
Jasdeep Sondhi (Master of Nursing Professional Practice student, Off-Campus)
Through my nursing degree, I hope to achieve a lifelong, fulfilling career of helping others and providing the best healthcare experience possible.
Gillian Studer (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Lloydminster Site)
My goal as a future Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is to provide in-person and telehealth services to First Nation communities.
Natasha Tooke (Postgraduate Degree Specialization Certificate Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner student, Off-Campus)

“Each year more than $200,000 is awarded to USask nursing students thanks to the generosity of our donors,” said Dr. Richter.

“Without them, this would not be possible. Donor support is invaluable to our students and for that, we thank our donors. We thank you for truly changing the lives of nursing students, one student at a time.”

“I would like to offer my congratulations to each of the students receiving an undergraduate award this year,” said Dr. Shelley Peacock (PhD), chair of the USask College of Nursing Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards Committee.

“These awards reflect the commitment our students have to their nursing program as they endeavour to become registered nurses. I am grateful to our kind donors for making a difference in the lives of so many students. I offer my sincere thanks to our donors for their continued support.”

“Graduate students choose to pursue graduate nursing education to enhance nursing knowledge and practice and to advance their careers, often doing so while balancing the demands of work and family life,” said Dr. Louise Racine (PhD), College of Nursing associate dean research and graduate studies.

“To our graduate students receiving these awards, I send my most sincere congratulations, as you are not only succeeding in your studies, but steadfastly striving towards excellence. And to our donors, thank you. Your generosity is making graduate education possible for these students.”
