Nursing Students Receive Over $216,000 in Student Awards

College of Nursing undergraduate and graduate students were awarded over $216,000 in scholarships and bursaries in 2021.

“Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.”

The words of Kathy Calvin describe how nursing students feel when they receive a student award from a donor. Donor gifts make a difference in the lives of students.

We are pleased to announce this year, 98 University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing undergraduate and graduate nursing students received a combined 74 awards, totaling $216,149.97.

“Donors have established awards in the College of Nursing to celebrate student leadership and community service, to uplift students, and to reward academic achievement,” said College of Nursing dean Dr. Solina Richter (DCur). “I am struck by the warmth and generosity of the people of this province. Thank you. The support of our donors is invaluable to our students.”

We asked this year’s award recipients to share what their plans are when they complete their nursing education. Here are just a few of those responses.

I hope to focus on Women's Heart Health, so that upon completion of my MN, I will be able to better support my nursing colleagues and serve the women and families facing heart disease here in Saskatchewan.
Elise Buschau (Master of Nursing student, Off-Campus)
I want to use my nursing degree to help patients navigate confusing emotions that come with diseases. I want to answer questions and make people feel seen, heard, and understood. I am excited to be in a career that is continually evolving and hope to work with children in critical care situations.
Brynn Colby (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Saskatoon Campus)
I hope to be a nursing voice for change towards greater equality and accessible health care, especially for the vulnerable and those without a voice.
Kelsey Finch (Nurse Practitioner student, Off-Campus)
With my nursing career, I hope to transform the way I live and contribute to the prosperity of others, specifically First Nations communities.
Wendy Leveque (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Prince Albert Campus)
I have been a nurse for over 20 years and with my PhD I am planning to teach nursing students and do nursing research.
Heather Nelson (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing student, Off-campus)
I strive to provide compassionate/holistic care and promote patient advocacy. I hope to advance my practice and discover new approaches to minimize health disparities within vulnerable populations.
Nicole Calma (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Regina Campus)
With my nursing degree, I hope to combine the caring nature inherent to nurses with an evidence-based approach to affect positive change in Saskatchewan.
Taylor Fulawka (Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, Yorkton Site)

We also asked award recipients what it means to receive a gift from a donor.

I am very grateful to be where I am and have the opportunity to receive this prestigious award. Receiving this award is rewarding to me for my hard work in my studies, as well helping me financially. Hiy Hiy – Thank you.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to extend my congratulations to students on receiving one of the 52 undergraduate awards available to them,” said Dr. Shelley Peacock (PhD), chair of the USask College of Nursing Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards Committee. “Each and every award has a story behind it that speaks to the powerful impact nurses make in people’s lives. It is my hope that each donor and family accept my heartfelt thanks for supporting our students and making a difference in their lives.”

Dr. Pammla Petrucka (PhD), interim associate dean research and graduate studies with the College of Nursing, wishes to thank donors for their support and congratulate graduate nursing students on receiving awards. “Donors, your generosity is a symbol of your commitment to making a difference in the opportunities for students. Graduate student awardees, your hard work and commitment to nursing is reflected in your success in achieving these awards.
