Research & Scholarship Day

Inaugural College of Nursing Research & Scholarship Day a Big Success.

Often when people think of health-related research, they focus on medical research - research conducted by medical doctors. But what about the research nurses do?

Did you know the development of eHealth Saskatchewan was created by a team, led by a nurse? Did you know a nurse came up with the idea of using virtual reality to train nursing staff working at the Irene & Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health in Saskatoon, SK?

These are just two examples of how nursing-led research is changing the world.

On June 3rd, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing virtually hosted its’ inaugural Research & Scholarship Day.

“The College of Nursing has incredible research and scholarship initiatives taking place and each research project is making a unique contribution to the health and wellness of individuals, communities, and our world,” said interim associate dean research and graduate studies Dr. Tracie Risling (PhD). “The Research & Scholarship Day was an opportunity for us to share our faculty and students research ideas, projects, and outcomes with the University of Saskatchewan, as well as external stakeholders.”

The day included two keynote speakers - Dr. Holly Graham, Indigenous Research Chair in Nursing & Assistant Professor, College of Nursing and Dr. Angela Bowen, Emeritus Professor, College of Nursing.

In addition to the keynote speakers, 15 research presentations from College of Nursing faculty and students were delivered. “The College of Nursing research signature areas include Community-Engaged Health and Nursing Research, Health Equity Research, and Innovations in Health Systems and Education Research,” said Dr. Risling. “We had a great turnout of presenters representing each of the signature areas.”

The day concluded with the presentation of student awards for Best Abstract to Master of Nursing recipient Kerry Marshall and Doctoral student Ivan Urcia.

“This was such an important event to give our faculty and students an opportunity to engage with external stakeholders (academic, practice, and community) to encourage collaboration and partnership in research,” said Dr. Risling. “After the success of today, we anticipate this will develop into an annual event.”

As part of Research & Scholarship Day, the College of Nursing launched its’ first researcher profile e-book.
