Dr. Alexander Clark Delivers Myrtle Crawford Lecture Series

Distinguished scholar Dr. Alexander Clark treated guests to several lectures during his recent visit to Saskatoon, as keynote speaker with the Myrtle Crawford Lecture Series.

Dr. Clark delivered two lectures to College of Nursing staff, faculty and graduate students, as well as one public lecture open to the University of Saskatchewan community.

The first lecture held on November 28th was titled, What complexity and realist theory mean for patient-oriented research: Insights, innovations and advances; the second lecture, Heart Disease is everyone’s business: How research can help us all live better & longer, took place November 29th and the final presentation in the lecture series, Presenting research better: Insights from theory, science and yourself, was delivered on November 30th.

“It was an honour to have Dr. Clark take the time from his busy schedule to spend the past three days with us discussing his passion,” said College of Nursing Professor and Research Lead Dr. Louise Racine. “It’s one thing to read about his work and his research in the many journals he is published in and authors for, but it’s another thing to hear him speak in person, interact with the audience and have the opportunity to ask him questions.”

Alexander Clark, RN, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Faculty of Nursing and Associate Dean Research at the University of Alberta. Dr. Clark has a ground-breaking program of research in cardiovascular health, more specifically, his program of research focuses on helping people with heart disease live longer and better lives. His main areas of interest include chronic disease management, secondary prevention/cardiac rehabilitation, self-care and complex interventions. Dr. Clark holds scientific leadership positions with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. As a senior author, his research has been published in some of the world's most influential journals. In 2011, Dr. Clark was recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader: Young Scientist and he was a member of the very select club of the Top 40 under 40 in Edmonton.

About Myrtle Crawford
Myrtle Crawford was a long-time faculty member in the University of Saskatchewan College of Nursing. She joined the School of Nursing in 1954 and was promoted through the ranks to professor in 1975. During her 35 year career, Professor Crawford influenced the education of hundreds of nurses. She was actively involved in the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association, the Canadian Nurses Association, the Canadian Association for University Schools of Nursing and the Canadian Association of History in Nursing. She was also influential in the establishment of the Master of Nursing program at the University of Saskatchewan. Professor Crawford passed away at the age of 65 in July 1989.
