Dr. Janet McCabe Receives President's SSHRC Grant

The College of Nursing would like to congratulate Assistant Professor Dr. Janet McCabe on her recent success in receiving a University of Saskatchewan President’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant.

Dr. McCabe’s study entitled “Mentorship & Youth with Exceptionalities: Building Sustainable Community through Sports”, looks to answer the question: how can a sports based program for youth with exceptionalities be developed to strengthen relationships and networks of participants, communities and volunteers? The study, based on results from two previously funded studies, will build on the experiences discussed by families and gather perspectives from key stakeholders such as volunteers and coaches.  The information will be used to determine the best way to structure and evaluate a sports-based pilot program focused on supporting youth with exceptionalities in sport through mentorship.

Dr. McCabe explains, “Inclusion in sports and leisure is something that some youth with disabilities experience a challenge with, especially in the context of rural communities.  This study aims to acknowledge those experiences and move one step further to determine what is needed by stakeholders to help facilitate this process.”

The President's SSHRC Research Fund is financed from an annual grant made to the President by SSHRC, in general support of research and scholarly work in the social sciences, humanities and fine arts at the University of Saskatchewan. The program supports small-scale preliminary research projects and the support is expected to aide in building research capacity and the development of a competitive application in SSHRC related fields.
