Student Creates Positive Situation from Unfortunate Disaster

After working on a recent fire disaster job site at a local lingerie business with Saskatoon Disaster Services, Chyanna Goodwin wasn’t about to stand-by and watch approximately six thousand new smoke damaged undergarments deemed unsalvageable be disposed of.

Chyanna did everything in her power to ensure these undergarments would be salvaged and put to good use. She prepared a proposal to Saskatoon Disaster Services as well as the owners of the undergarments wherein she indicated that she would do everything in her power to disperse the undergarments to women in need.

Chyanna Goodwin learned at a young age, the value of support from communities and how it can help rebuild lives for those who have lived with domestic violence.

“As a nursing student I have become more aware and feel more confident in advocating for such supports and feel the need to reach out to help in ways that I can,” said Goodwin. “I feel this is a great opportunity to build and demonstrate leadership skills and become more aware of community health opportunities, involving myself, women in the community and other nursing students in developing community relationships, personal awareness and advocacy skills. We have learned that nursing is not just a profession, it is a life style. Wherever we go, whatever time of day or circumstance we find ourselves in, we feel the need to help, serve and care for those requiring assistance."

Chyanna along with friends, family and other nursing students will volunteer their time and undergo the task of sorting and laundering all of the undergarments as well as distributing them to women in need and shelters by the end of summer.
