Lecturer Don Leidl receives Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching

The annual Provost's Award for Outstanding Teaching recognizes an outstanding teacher in each College at the University of Saskatchewan.

The 2015 College of Nursing recipient is Limited Term Lecturer Don Leidl from the Saskatoon Campus. Don is honoured for his achievements in outstanding teaching and educational leadership.

When asked about his teaching style, Leidl replied, "Mental health is everywhere in the healthcare system, and if our purpose as nurses is to provide holistic, patient centered care, then it is vital all nurses have the skills necessary to address patients mental health needs.  My goal is to create a student centered learning environment that is supportive during the transformative process associated with nursing education, so nursing students can discover their own style of providing holistic nursing care."

Don has been with the College of Nursing since the fall of 2012, previously holding a faculty position in the undergraduate nursing program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic/University of Regina.  He has been a Registered Nurse since 2001 and has an extensive clinical background in acute care and emergency department psychiatry.  He has worked in a variety of mental health nursing positions in Calgary and the eastern United States and started his teaching career in 2005 at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University before moving back to Saskatoon in 2007 to teach full time. He is currently finishing his Doctorate of Education through the University of Liverpool and has research interests involving mental health nursing curriculum, collaborative nursing and police mental health initiatives and the use of remote presence technology in higher education.

Outside of work, Don was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan and finished high school and his undergraduate nursing degree in Saskatoon. He is family oriented and loves spending time with his wife and two young sons.  He is a huge football fan cheering for both the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Green Bay Packers.  He loves to travel and has aspirations of relocating his family to Europe at some point in his career.

Congratulations Don. We are proud to have you on the College of Nursing team.
