The College of Nursing Celebrates our 75th Anniversary With Events in Northern Saskatchewan

At the La Ronge Hotel & Suites on February 11th, we joined together for a dinner with the dean and an evening full of laughter and great stories. Guests enjoyed a slideshow with college photos from the past 75 years and a presentation by current Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students profiling the history of health in the La Ronge area. Mayor Thomas Sierzycki brought greetings on behalf of the community and Andrew McLetchie, CEO of the Mamawetan Churchill River Regional Health Authority (MCRRHA), spoke about the importance of educating nurses in the community. Guests concluded the evening by taking a trip down memory lane viewing items such as a 1960s nursing procedures book, an original nursing cap and a nursing uniform in the archival display.

At the St. Joseph's Hospital & Health Centre in Ile-a-la-Crosse on February 12th, we continued our northern celebrations with another dinner with the dean. Students, staff and members of the community braved the cold and came out and enjoyed an archival display containing historical pins, a sports jersey and an original nursing uniform, as well as a slideshow with college photos from the past 75 years. Mayor Duane Favel brought greetings on behalf of the community and spoke about how grateful he was that the College of Nursing brought the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to Ile-a-la-Crosse and MLA Buckley Belanger brought greetings on behalf of the province of Saskatchewan. Following dinner, guests had a chance to visit with "PERT", the robot that connects nursing students and faculty in order to teach the BSN program in that community.

Although these events were hosted to celebrate the College of Nursing 75th Anniversary, guests at these northern celebrations, had an opportunity to celebrate something unique to the northern nursing program. Over the past six months, the College of Nursing has been working on a promotional video about the use of Remote Presence technology to deliver undergraduate nursing education in northern Saskatchewan. A sneak preview of the video, which will be officially revealed to the public at the beginning of March (stay tuned!), was presented to guests at both events on February 11th and 12th.
