Professor Carol Bullin Receives Provost's Project Grant for Innovative Practice in Collaborative Teaching and Learning

Professor Bullin received the $10,000 grant for her project entitled Telerobotics: The use of Technology for Teacher Presence in the Delivery of an Undergraduate Nursing Course.

The Provost's Project Grant for Innovative Practice in Collaborative Teaching and Learning is an annual grant awarded to a U of S department or non-departmentalized college to undertake innovation in collaborative teaching and learning.

Professor Bullin is using an innovative approach to deliver undergraduate nursing courses to students living in northern Saskatchewan, utilizing Remote Presence (RP) technology. The RP7i model the College of Nursing is using is an independently mobile robot, with a flat-screen monitor for visual display, a dual camera configuration and full on-board audio, for a seamless and immersive experience. The technology allows faculty experts like Professor Bullin to engage with students at remote sites to teach and assess clinical competencies.

When asked about using RP technology to deliver nursing education, Professor Bullin said, "the sky is the limit in terms of possibilities and this is just the beginning". She went on to say, "The northern students have embraced this teaching strategy - I even get 'robotic hugs'!"
