College of Nursing Hosts Writing for Publication workshop with Dr. Marilyn Oermann
Dr. Marilyn Oermann is no stranger to the College of Nursing. In 2002, she presented the College’s annual Myrtle Crawford Memorial Lecture and last week, she was back conducting a workshop and mentoring nursing faculty in writing for publication.
On October 17 and 18, approximately 30 faculty members and graduate students from the College of Nursing participated in the workshop and a number benefited from individual consultations.
Based on her book, Writing for Publication, Dr. Oermann’s workshop provided a comprehensive review of topics including why it is important to write, preparing to write and writing research, evidence-based practice and clinical practice articles. The workshop also included information on the writing process — common pitfalls and best practices in writing for publication and a step-by-step “how-to” take a final paper through to publication.
When asked about the workshop, Dr. Oermann replied, “The tragedy is when nursing faculty have great ideas and they don’t publish them. Although it may seem like a difficult task, I’m here to help them realize it’s really a step-by-step process”. “Our faculty have a wealth of expertise and it is important we share this knowledge,” said Dr. Phil Woods, Associate Dean Research, Innovation and Global Initiatives with the College of Nursing. He went on to say, “Our research unit is always looking for ways to help position our faculty and workshops, such as this one, are perfect. Having someone with Dr. Oermann’s caliber and expertise present to our faculty and graduate students is really valuable”.
About Dr. Marilyn Oermann
Dr. Marilyn Oermann is a distinguished nursing mentor. She earned her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in Curriculum & Instruction and her MSNEd at the University of Pittsburgh in Medical Surgical Nursing/Nursing Education. Currently, Dr. Oermann is a faculty member of the University of North Carolina’s School of Nursing, where she is the Frances Hill Fox Distinguished Professor & Adult/Geriatric Health Chair.
Dr. Oermann is highly respected internationally as a nurse educator, researcher, author and editor. She received the 2009 National League for Nursing Award for Excellence in Nursing Education Research and several of her books are now in second or third editions, including Writing for Publication in Nursing, Clinical Teaching Strategies in Nursing and Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nursing Care Quality and Editor of Nurse Author and Editor. Dr. Oermann is a Fellow of both the Academy of Nursing Education, National League for Nursing and the American Academy of Nursing.
